Redefining Destination Triathlon

Where endurance sport meets destination storytelling

THE CHALLENGE

Challenge Sir Bani Yas was created to establish Abu Dhabi as a global destination for endurance sport through one of the region’s most distinctive triathlon experiences. Set on Sir Bani Yas Island - a protected nature reserve established in 1971 by the late founder of the UAE, HH Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, home to wildlife, historical sites, and adventure tourism - the event combined elite racing with one of the world's most unique destination settings.

Following a successful inaugural edition in 2025, the event returned in 2026 with the addition of the region’s first triathlon cruise ship experience - transforming the race into a fully integrated floating race village and athlete hotel.

The evolution of the event introduced a new layer of communitications complexity, requiring the seamless integration of sport, tourism, hospitality, and entertainment into a single premium endurance experience capable of resonating with both international athletes and the regional community.

OUR APPROACH

F31 led the marcomms strategy and execution for both editions, helping evolve Challenge Sir Bani Yas from a new race launch into an internationally recognised endurance property.

Our approach centred on positioning Sir Bani Yas Island not simply as a race venue, but as an immersive destination experience - combining elite racing, adventure, nature, hospitality, and culture through a unified storytelling ecosystem.

The introduction of the cruise ship experience became the defining narrative of the 2026 campaign, with communications designed to spotlight the event’s first-of-its-kind floating race village and athlete experience. As an entirely new concept within global triathlon, athlete education and reassurance became a key part of the strategy. F31 delivered pre-event athlete shoots onboard the cruise ship to showcase the experience first-hand across social, PR, and digital channels ahead of race weekend.

During event week, a 20+ person content and production team operated across the cruise ship, race village, and race routes - delivering real-time global coverage while simultaneously building a long-term destination content library for future events.

The result: strong international visibility, growing athlete demand, and the successful positioning of Challenge Sir Bani Yas as one of the Middle East’s most unique endurance sport experiences.
